I had seen this elsewhere, and it's a touching story.. but the funny thing about it is the dissonance between the player's perception and how the game actually works.

In Animal Crossing, the system periodically sends mail to every player, composed of a non sequitur in the body, an attached present, and signed "Mom;" they're auto-generated messages from the player character's "mom," not an actual person. This continues whether you're actively playing or not.

I wonder if the author of the comic had forgotten that over the preceding year and a half, and I wonder if anyone's reminded him since. I know I wouldn't have the heart.

I nearly cried at the ending of Half-Life 2 episode 2.
